Trigger Argee was sent to Maccadon's Colonial School to organize the Plasmoid Project, the study of living Old Galactic artifacts her boss, Commissioner Holati Tate, discovered. Eight weeks later she is working under a false name with dyed hair, Tate and the great biologist Mantelish have vanished, nobody will tell her why, and grabbers have just raided the school grounds.

When Trigger decides to quit, she is snatched off the street by people who claim to be her friends. Major Heslet Quillan, the Psychology Service and the Ermetyne Lyad of Tranest all seem to want something from her, rival powers are circling the plasmoids, and even her old friends are starting to wonder whether something has been done to her mind.
