Somewhere on Earth lives a telepath who can kill a man, take his face and his place, and fool even his closest friends. He has already shown what happens to people who go looking for him: a hotel blown apart, a city's water poisoned, a liner lost.

Arlene Rolf is the micromachinist working with Dr. Ben Lowry on a secret project at Cleaver Spaceport, a diex thought projector that could make an ordinary telepath strong enough to find the rogue. Now Colonel Ferris Weldon has come to tell them the device is about to be used, and that the rogue knows it. Within hours he will come for the projector, and anyone near Arlene could be him.
