Ross Murdock is a young crook with a talent for slipping out of trouble, until a judge gives him a choice between prison and a secret government project.

The project is stranger than he could have guessed. The Reds have begun producing technology no one on Earth should be able to invent, and the trail leads not to another country but into the distant past, to a civilization far more advanced than anything in the history books. After tough training at a hidden Arctic base, Ross is sent back to Bronze Age Britain with the hard, quiet agent Ashe, posing as a Beaker trader among wary tribes. But the enemy is already there, and whatever they have found does not belong in any century.
