Conjure Wife

Norman Saylor, a rising professor of ethnology at small, stuffy Hempnell College, has never snooped in his wife's dressing room before. When he does, he finds little bottles of graveyard dirt labeled with names, and soon charms tucked all over the house. Tansy, it turns out, has been quietly working magic for years to protect him.

Norman studies superstition for a living and knows exactly what it is worth, so he makes Tansy burn every charm. Almost at once his luck turns: a flunked student with a grudge and a gun, an accusation from a girl in his class, a colleague angling for the same promotion, and the faculty wives smiling at him over their bridge tables. Either it is all coincidence, or Tansy was never the only witch at Hempnell.
