The Forgotten Planet

Burl has never seen the sun. On a cloud-wrapped world the galaxy forgot, the descendants of a wrecked liner's passengers live like hunted animals among giant mushrooms, deadly spores and insects the size of cattle, without fire, metal or any memory of where they came from. His own grandfather was taken by a hunting spider.

Then Burl picks up the horn of a dead beetle and learns that a sharp thing can kill. A spear, a cloak of moth wing, a meal of meat he killed himself: each small discovery lets him do what no one in his tribe of twenty has dared. With Saya at his side and the others trailing behind, Burl begins to lead his people out of the lowlands, past wasps, spiders and army ants, toward hills nobody has climbed.
