The Bottle Imp

For fifty dollars, Keawe buys a bottle that will grant any wish, and the man who sells it cannot get him out of the door fast enough. An imp lives in the milk-white glass. It can give love, fame, money or a house like a palace, but it cannot lengthen life, and whoever dies still owning it burns in hell forever. It can only be sold, for coin, at a loss.

Keawe wishes for a fine house on the Kona coast of Hawaii, gets rid of the bottle, and wins the love of Kokua. Then a sickness appears on his skin, and the only cure is the bottle again, whose price has fallen so low that whoever buys it next may never be able to sell it.
