The Door Through Space

Race Cargill has spent six years behind a desk in Terran Intelligence, his face scarred and a death sentence on his name outside the Trade City walls on Wolf. On the night he finally leaves the planet, they pull him off the starship.

His sister Juli has come back from the Dry-towns in chains. Her husband Rakhal Sensar, once Race's partner and now his blood-enemy, has vanished with their little daughter Rindy, after filling the child's head with visions from a strange nonhuman toy. To find her, Race must take up his old Dry-town disguise, ride the caravan road to Shainsa and Charin, and face a feud that Wolf's law says only one of them can survive. Meanwhile a girl with crimson eyes keeps vanishing into the shrines of the Toad God.
